Art Museum District!

The Art Museum area is located between the Schuylkill River and Broad Street and between Girard Avenue and Fairmount, and gets its name from the landmark building that sits on the bank of the river. The area also includes the Rodin Museum, and will soon be the new home of the Barnes Foundation. As such, this neighborhood is Philadelphia’s main showcase for famous artwork and exhibits. Besides being a cultural center in the city, the Art Museum area also has a large number of residential sections. Most of the houses are row homes built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and feature the redbrick facades that are such a distinctive part of the city. There are also several larger houses built when the area was still on the outskirts of Philadelphia. These include the Bergdoll Mansion, the Stetson house and the stately home of former local politician Vincent Fumo. The Art Museum neighborhood is one of the quieter and most scenic sections of the city. Bordering on the river and alongside Fairmount Park, there is less through traffic than in other residential areas, and the natural dip in the land toward the river means that even smaller side streets often have distinctive views.
